Guitars.

So today Rob, KG and myself found ourselves @ Studio Väst AKA Studio Zen again, for some more guitar recordings. We thought we might get done, all done with the guitar tracks for the album, but we did not. We have one song left. This, the time-taking, is mostly due to the fact that tis album will have more guitars on it then was intended, simply because they sound so good.

So, I guess we have one day of guitar recordings left after this. Then… well, then… yeah…

Here’s a fantastic picture of me and KG waiting for Rob this morning.

Here’s a picture of KG and Rob in action. To bad you can’t see me. I’m all up in the big brown leather couch being all Rick Rubin:ish and shit.

Last (?) guitar rehearsal session.

Just came back from a guitar rehearsal session with KG.
Went great.
We covered all the songs KG has left to lay guitar on. Hopefully we’ll get them all recorded on the 3:rd. Then we’ll see what happens.

Strange how the songs shift shapes with every added instrument. Even if the track is just a dub the style and feel of the song can completely change. I hope this is a good thing. Have no idea where this album is heading. It’s going to be so much fun to hear the end product.

I’ve crawled to the cross…

So, I’ve ‘crawled to the cross’ (as the Swedish Pro Verb goes) and gotten myself a youtube-account. I’ve done this for two reasons:
1. I want to share video with you.
2. I have not got the money to host it myself or let WordPress host it.

Why today? Well, because of the following:

This morning Rob and I took the dreaded tram over to KGs Studio Väst [under the prior link you can find some more photos, from the last recording session, the one before this one... and so on... etc.] for some guitar recording. While doing so, or more from my stand point; watching KG do so, I shot a crappy video of him with my crappy camera. (Need to get me a better one.) Thought it would be a cool thing for you all, my avid fans to watch.

So here it is. It’s KG laying down a solo for a song that will end up on the new album. (Due out in September/october… I hope.)

For those of you being more old-school I’ll also throw in some pictures:

All went great and it sounds really good. Five and a half tracks of guitar recording left to do… then we move onwards, and upwards… and maybe a little side ways.

Short and sweet.

Had a rehearsal session with KG today over at Studio Väst. Went great! Tomorrow Rob comes down from up north; from Heather Wedge, and we record. Three songs is/are on the agenda. It’s going to be magical.

Also, still on the musical tip, I talked to a guy about a thing today. I ‘ll tell you all about the guy and the thing… well mostly the thing very soon. It’s going to be glorious!

The ‘Mon ChiChi’-look.

Good day!
Stress levels are up…
Why?
Well, long story short, The Boo has been to the vet, paw in band-aid, eating meds. Always a stressful situation; and It’s going to keep being stressful for a couple of days, as Camilla and I rearrange our schedules around the dog not being alone. Had to cancel a special beer night tomorrow but what do you do? I love the little bear!
Tomorrow school sets in again… well, it hasn’t ever stopped but the involuntary long stay in London made me miss a lecture. So, now it feels like coming back from a break. Spring break.
That’s about it really. Not much happening.
Upcoming events later this week includes rehearsals, and recording, with KG and Rob. Don’t expect us to finish the recordings (guitar) but hope we’ll get some done.
Also! Got a haircut today! (In a rehash from my Twitter-feed) I went for the ‘Mon ChiChi’-look!

Recording guitar.

So, yesterday Rob, KG and I headed out to KG and Lars-Martins place Studio Väst (A.K.A. Studio Zen). It was supposed to be a super-productive day but the volcanic ash had its say on, and in, this matter as well. As I did not get home until Wednesday and Tuesday was the day on which KG and I had pencilled in some rehearsals, we ended up with a kind of rehears-record-come up with ideas-session. Great end result, not much of it though. KG laid some tracks on two songs, I on a third. Sounded awesome though. New dates next week.

Pre-post(s).

So, I’m home, we’re home. After a 12h journey by Underground, Express Train, Airplane, Train, Bus and Car. We came home the day before yesterday. My body still aches. I’ll give you all the lowdown on all our adventures. Also, I’m soon going to talk about the guitar recording session we, Rob, KG and I, had over at Studio Väst yesterday. (Yes, that’s right: yesterday. No rest here.)

A short summary of what I’ve been up to:

I’ve been quiet for the past couple of days.
Hasn’t been that much to say.

A short summary of what I’ve been up to:

Camilla and I went out with a friend for a couple of beers. While doing that we bumped into an ass (an idiot).
Arsenal drew with Birmingham which left me mad the entire day.
I just chilled.
Read up on my Nelson Goodman.
Had a Goodman lecture.
Had a reoccurrence of my ass-injury. Big set back. Not fun.
Watched Arsenal teach Barcelona the lesson that a game of football is 90 minutes long, not 60.
Helped Lars-Martin and KG build in their studio. (More pics over at Lars-Martins place.)
School has gone fantastic!

Here’s some arty pics of the newly refurbished, empty, studio (and, in the first picture, some random handy-man who just walked into the shot):

Oh, and for those of you wondering; for those of you keeping tabs – wasn’t the great Tomas Halberstad supposed to record guitar for his next album today? – the recording did not happen. Rob is sick… stomach bug. We’ll aim for the 6:th instead.

One last thing, if you hoped that this sudden spur of blog writing would sooth your needs for the next days, in that there would be more, don’t hold your breath. It’s easter, the ‘in-laws’ are coming to visit and we’ll be going all over the place.

Talk to you soon enough!

‘Rob and Tomas’-time.

On the 1:st and the 6:th of April Rob and I will be in the studio recording some guitars for my upcoming album. Yes, you heard me… or read me. We’ll be recording! Recording sessions comes few and far between but we’re getting there. The album will get done… this year… I hope. To be honest it hasn’t taken that much time; ‘Rob and Tomas’-time that is. We started recording in October 2009, and I’m pretty sure, although I don’t want to jinx it, that we’ll finish before October this year. And that’s quick! The 1:st record, The Anger, took two and a half years from first recording session to release. I’m also going to try to set up some rehearsal sessions with KG before his recording sessions (he plays classical lead guitar, Eddie van Halen shit). After that there’s only the odd percussion, synth and effect left…

Oh, and all the vocals…

Better start singing into that mic.

The Friday that KG called.

Friday, and oh what a Friday!
What have I done? Nothing! Nothing, I scream! I scream! (I scream, I scream, I scream for ice cream! As the old TriumfGlass slogan goes.) But, I got a phone call today. A phone call with a date. February 5:th. Yes folks, that is the date!

KG called me and said that the renovation/re-modelling of his studio has been postponed from Dec 1:st to Feb 5:th. Good news! And, as I am a man who take my signs-sent seriously (not, however, this time it fit) I think it’s not more than fair, to you all, my super avid fans, to say that the album, the new album, of which there is a title (which I haven’t shared with you yet, or… I might have, but don’t remember having, and I’m guessing you do not remember being gifted that title if I have so) I won’t share. Not yet. But it’s a stunning title. You’ll be stunned. Put your phaser on stun! (And no, I do not med the guitar FX-pedals.)

Third Times the Charm.

I handed in my bachelors thesis today. For the third time. My advisor has been nice to me. But, I’ve also done good! And the deal still stands: If I get the highest grade possible, I will publish it here. and you will read it, oh yes, you will read it.

So, thats about all I’ve done today. Cleaning up the thesis for hand-in. Well, apart from the odd dog-walk, the doing of the laundry, a Kant-lecture and a nice city walk with The Boo and Camilla in the beautiful, beautiful but cold, oh so cold fall/winter weather. Really thought I was going to freeze my ass off there for a bit, and I’m not one who freezes easily, but then I got a cup of coffee and all was well.

Rob hooked up with KG today to get the files, filled with nice drum sounds. (The files for the first five songs). Don’t know much more about that then… well… that. On Friday KG and I are going to listen trough, and edit, the last five. The they’re of to Rob then Bass Man Brandt should get hold of them and not long after that, sweet bass is to be recorded.

It’s all coming along very nicely!

Bread, town, cars and fall.

Today started off with a trip to the bakery. Göteborgs best bakery! If you like your sour-dough bread and your ecological stuff this is the place to come to. And, yet another plus, it’s cheap! I’m giving the cheapness to the fact that the bakery is run as a co-op. (At least I think it is.) Heres the link: Cum Pane!

So, back home for a sour-dough bread breakfast! Then, during coffee, Camilla and I decided to go into town to get some stuff done.

1. Cleaners!
We went to the cleaners to get a jacket, a shirt and a pair of pants, jeans clean. Since the jeans were of a raw selvage kind I wanted them to be dry cleaned. In fact I insisted on it. The girl in the store wanted me to have them water cleaned stating that dry cleaning it might get the grease and other fats out but it would not get them really clean and the smell of well worn in jeans, would not come out. Two things are strange about this, One: the jeans makers, the makers of fine raw selvage denim, recommend dry-cleaning over machine wash. Two: Did she by that statement dismiss at least half of her business as a fraud?
We’ll see how they turn out when I’ll get them back.

2. Perfume!
Got a gift certificate for my birthday. Got it to buy a perfume. So I did. Paul Smith Man.

3. Textile colour and shower curtain!
Camilla and I both have miss-coloured shirts. Shirts which we both love, and want to wear. We’ll try to keep them alive by colouring away the stains. We also needed a new shower curtain so we bought one of those. A really stripe:y one.

4. Dog food!
Yes, The Boo needs his fix. So, we got it.

A little observation. As we parked our car, in one of Göteborgs more central car-parks, here’s a couple of the cars parked next to us: Mercedes R500, Mercedes GLK 350 cdi, Land Rover (the biggest one), Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade and the biggest pic up ever. Now, were in the middle of Göteborg, not a big town but still big enough for traffic to prevent speeds over 50 kmh, and there’s not a lot of space… Now, this is not an original thought but who drive’s these cars? People with money? And would you think it’s a stretch to think that all of these cars have gotten to the car-park with one driver and no passengers?

Then back home and the studying began. Was going to finish my Bachelors’s Thesis today but in the mail I got another little hand-in assignment due today. So, I did that.

In between the studied I have taken a couple of walks with The Boo. It has been a beautiful day here in göteborg. Cold as hell but blue skies so I’m not complaining. In fact, I am doing the opposite. Summers greenness and all that, but it can’t really compare to the colour explosions of fall going into winter. The green, red, yellow, brown and versions there of. Amazing.

Here’s a pic of the tree outside our balcony:

Before I’ll leave you I’ll give you a pic of the in-studio work KG and I did yesterday:

A bit of a long post with not much interesting said…
There you have it.

Drum takes.

Just came home from KGs studio. We, KG and I, were there to listen to the drum-takes, listen to the alternate drum-takes, choose between the different drum-takes, fix the drum-takes, polish the drum-takes, take the drum-takes, drum-takes drum-takes.

5 songs. Half the amount recorded. Was what we mustered today. The last 5 will be done, listened to, and all that, on Friday.

On Wednesday Rob will get the drum-files and get cracking.

Yupp. That’s it.

Drums done, Irish picture.

Second day in the studio today. We had 4 more tracks, 4 tracks left over from yesterday, to get on tape (although that is more an expression than the truth since we’re not using tape, we’re using hard drive).

It took a lot of strength and a few too many re-takes but we got there. Tired, but there.

Here’s KG, Chrille and some chubby guy in action:

sd2_1

That’s all there is to say really. Chrille played his ass of and it turned out great. KG says it sounds good too!

The sound came from these drums:

Over all it’s been a good two days. And how can it not with this scenery?

sd2_3

(Bit of a tired saying there, of course one can think of a million ways where this scenery would not imply two good days… Still.)

Also: Got a picture from Ireland today. Dave has gotten his CD and is posing proud:

Sorry that I can’t give you a fuller post. I’m tired and Camilla and I are going to watch a movie.

Rehearsal nearing recording…

Today the band and I rehearsed for a bit. We need to get things straight, and still have a bit to go… were getting there though. We tried out three new songs, since we’ve thrown three away. The new album will be an album of 10. 10 rock songs. Rock.

I only managed to get two pics.
This one:

rep_donner_1

Look closely and you’ll see Brandt, KG and Chrille. Also this pic of the car ride home in Martins mothers car, in it: Martins favourite album:

rep_donner_2

So… Yeah… Hmm…

The band and I play all day long.

A full day of rehearsals today. Up at 0700h. Met up with Martin and KG at Martins place at 0845h and at around 0910h we were at KG’s place (The Studio/Rehearsal Space etc.).

We had 10 songs to run through. Or 10 songs we could run through. There was no pressure to do all 10, and we did not, we did 9. 8 of the 10 songs feel like keepers, the other 2 I have to think about for a bit. I think that I think that they don’t fit… with the others… sort of.

It sounded great! I was really surprised. 1-3 rehearsals more and we’ll be ready for the studio.
Clarification: Not surprised that it sounded great, at all. Surprised that it sounded so great already, after only 2 rehearsals and a month since the last one.

There.

So, on to the pics.

First one: Kg and myself engaged in deep conversation about shredds, sweeps, melodies in harmony, power chords and the ever ongoing battle of Yngwieeeeeee vs. Vaaaiii…

Second one: Martin playing air bass.

Third one: A lot of air-instrumenting going on.

Fourth one: I only managed to get two decent clicks of Brandt. So here’s him hiding behind a car upon our arrival.

20 track album…?

At the studio with KG today… at his studio.. with him in it… doing the recording and stuff. We recorded nine tracks of guitar and vocals. Nine demo-tracks (without the real lyrics, as there are none yet). I will sent out the tracks to the other members of my band so they can rehears a bit on there own. It also, during this recording, dawned on me just how many tracks I have for this album. There must be near twenty tracks. I’ll see what I’ll do about that. Can’t have a twenty track album…

Tired as fruit and looking onwards.

Tired as a banana right now. Worked a 11h shift yesterday, then off to Liseberg, then to bed way too late then another 11h shift today. I’m beat like an old drum. That doesn’t really matter though, because there’s not much going on with the thing that needs to be on going. Nothing for me to write about really.

Tomorrow, however, I am going to do two major things:

  1. Start working on my bachelors thesis again.
I have some fine tuning; tidying up, fixy things to do with it before I hand it in on August the 10:th.
  2. Rehears a little.
On Tuesday afternoon and evening I am going to KG to record and I need to know the songs I am recording (even if the recordings are for internal, as in the band, use).

The weather is excruciating. I know it’s like swearing in church to wish the sun away, in Sweden (or in the northern parts of Europe) more than in other places I would imagin (since the summers here are short). I, however, stand by the lead in sentence. Please, let there be a cold wind, a cloud, perhaps some drops of rain.. I can’t take it anymore.

That on that.

On Tuesday I will (I hope) go to KG’s place and record the songs for the next album. I will record acoustic guitar and vocals only versions. I will do this because my fellow musicians; the guys in the band, are a really busy group of guys. Finding time when all of us can rehears together is near impossible. So, the will get the songs so they can practice and think at home.

I will not present any of the songs here, nor anywhere… ever. Why? Well I only have the lyrics for one song finished so I’m guessing there will be a lot of I love you’s and time… for some reason I always seem to get the word time in, several times, when I am singing a melody which has no lyrics (and not wanting to hum).

Tomorrow ans Sunday I will work. I will, however, cram in a visit to Liseberg tomorrow night.

‘Til then…
