That’s that and this is this.

I’ve been spending the afternoon watching football but I really do not want to talk about that.
Read this if you want to know how I feel. Crap!

I have also been doing some on and off studying. I should probably have been reading more today but I’ll catch up tomorrow, it is Saturday after all. I am, however, getting a bit worried about the paper I am going to write this semester. A PM on it has to be delivered on Monday.

I have two ideas as to what I am going to write about. I am leaning towards Political Philosophy. In particular John Ralws and his book A Theory of Justice. In that book he has something which he calls The Original Position and a concept called The Veil of Ignorance. I think I am going to write about the limitations Ralws puts on the individuals behind The Veil of Ignorance knowledge-wise and see if I can argue that fewer limitations, if any, would, in the end, lead to a even more fair society for all. (This since Rawls with A Theory of Justice is painting us a picture on how to reach the most fair society – simply put.)

No music news at all. Rob hasn’t gotten back to me regarding which days we can record.

A new review of sorts…

Yes. A new review, or perhaps: other media mention, of ‘The Anger’ has surfaced.
This time from the site skivkoll.se, check it out by clicking here (in Swedish)!

I usually don’t comment on reviews, mostly since I think that everyone is entitled to there own opinion, but “knagglig Engelska” (which means rugged or perhaps even bad English), and this in referral to the writings on this blog and the language I use…
I always thought that my English was pretty good… guess it isn’t.

First rehearsal and ramblings on it.

When I used to play in bands we used to rehears a lot. When I now play for myself I really haven’t. It seems like a band-thing to do. A band needs to rehears in order to sound good together. Don’t get me wrong, I am not claiming that I sound good, not in any objective way (which can’t exist can it?). I’m just saying that I sound like me, and good together with me. How can I not?

A couple of years ago, after I had just stopped playing in bands, I found that there is another up-side to rehearsing and that was, and is, to remember your songs. A band plays them so frequently at rehearsals that forgetting them is almost, illness and accident induced apart, impossible to forget.

I found this out because I forgot my own songs. I wrote a song, played it a couple of times and then moved on to the next one, writing and playing. After a while, and maybe three or four songs written, the first song was forgotten.

First couple of times this happened I was really bummed out. I always thought that I had forgotten the best song in the world. (This was, however, never the case… I think.) After a while I came up with an explanation which might be true but it also might be true only as a defence mechanism, actually, there were two explanations or defence mechanisms.

The first was a little thing that I had picked up from, then, Swedish talk show host, now, television program producer, Erik Haag, then host of a show on ZTV called Knesset (ther was only one video-link for Knesset and that on has Kristian Luuk as the host, he was prior to Erik, you get the idea of the show at least) He, once on the show said something on par with: I don’t write stuff down. If the idea is good enough I’ll remember it. Sadly this isn’t true since the brain, our hard drive, can’t distinguish good ideas from bad. I guess one can, to a certain extent, train ones memory but one rarely gets to choose what one remembers.

Bad method or not I applied this to my song writhing. If the song is good enough I’ll remember it.

I don’t think that I did. I did remember some songs. If they were better than the once that I forgot I doubt. I remembered some really poor songs.

The other explanation that I came up with is a true one. I decided that what I thought was fun was to write songs and when I had written them that was it for me. If I forgot them so what. I write that this is true because it is. Writing is what I enjoy but I no longer see just songwriting as the entire process, there is the recording part of it as well. This means that I need to record a song before my journey is complete.

I could record it at home, just after I had written it but then the idea of quality sets in. I mean: If I have spent days, weeks, sometimes months in getting a song together why would I want to make a bad recording of it? Who would package a diamond in a paper bag?

Since studio time is hard to come by, for a poor student like myself, I now have to remember my songs and how do I do that best if not go back to my teenage band-days of rehearsal.

This is essentially where this monster post leads. To tell you that I have, for the first time actually, rehearsed the songs to appear on the next album and good songs they are, I’ll bet you I’ll remember all of them.

(For those of you wanting to read even more and also ask the question: But hey! This is you second album you are about to record. how the hell did you go about recording the first one if you did not rehearse for that one and that one, as we all know from your whining about it, took you two and a half year to complete? An extremal valid question! Here’s the thing. My first album was for the most part written on synths, in the computer. so when I had written a part I just pressed save and the computer remembered the song for me. So what you can deduce from that sentence is: this time the songs have not been written on the computer.)

What does a lie-detector detect?

How bad is this, if completely true, for people, organisations and nations using lie-detectors in there justice systems?

Two scientist one from the University of Gothenburg and one from the University of Stockholm have published a paper claiming that lie-detectors probably aren’t as much lie-detectors as the company, or companies, making them would like them to be ( link in Swedish).

Read the abstract in the paper and you’ll get a better idea.

They are now also being threatened with a law suit  (link in Swedish) from one of the companies making them. Who obviously is more interested in money than truth.

Think of the implications this will have to all crime cases, still open, where a lie-detector has been used and the information gathered from it ha been seen as solid evidence…

First surf of the day.

Good morning to you all!
I’ve been up since 0620h studying, walking the Boo and having breakfast. Now I’m surfing the Internet to get my morning fix of useful and useless. In a while I’ll be on my way too school. I have two lectures today! Well… not really. I have one lecture and one Introduction to paper writing (since I this semester am going to write a fairly big paper, time wise, and credit wise, it will take up half of it, the semester that is… writing the paper will take up half the semester… there!).

No new reviews, no news from Rob, no nothing. In relation to music these no’s are.

Tonight Arsenal play Everton away. It seems like ages since I watched an Arsenal game but fact is I only missed the FA-cup one against Cardiff (a nil-nil game so perhaps one to miss). I’m looking forward to it and here’s hoping that Arsenal kick ass (since Villa once again got some undeserved help last night… do I smell a conspiracy here?).

Scrapings from the bottom of the barrel.

This is how far Rob and I have come in recording the new album: I have e-mailed Rob a list of days where I have nothing planned and therefore am able to record. I can add that Rob has to sync that with the list of days on which he is able to record and the talk to the guy who owns the studio about which of the Rob and Tomas synced days we actually can be in the studio…

As you can see: We’ve not come very far. I am however hopeful that the recording will start in February.

That is the extent of music news today.

In other news: not much. I have been studying hard and will keep doing so this entire semester it seems. Looking at the schedule there seems to be no easy patch or patches. Full throttle all the way.

I am hungry. Food awaits, let’s not keep it!

Chart-check.

Really not much to report today apart from the fact that I really need to get reading (which is really nothing to report… and we are back where we started). So I’m going to do a little chart check on the cdon.com download charts for the Nordic region. I will be checking chart positions for the single: ‘Travel as I Wait’ and the album: ‘The Anger’. Ok here goes!

  • Sweden: Single at number 28. Album not in the top 82.
  • Norway: Single at number 1! Album not in top 50.
  • Denmark: Single not in top 50. Album not in top 50.
  • Finland: Single not in top 50. Album not in top 50.

All in all a pretty bummer read. (If your wondering why I only cover the cdon.com charts it is because the have an exclusive deal to sell my album and single until February 28.)

Home and deaf… what? DEAF! What!?

If you haven’t guessed it, by my last post, I’m at home. Camilla and I have come back home from the birthday party we attended yesterday. So we’ve been in a car for nearly four hours today. Our rental, little box car. Badly insulated, for sound that is. Insane volume from the engine and road.

Nothing else to report.

Over and out.

Another ‘The Anger’ review…

I can honestly say that reviews of my album ‘The Anger’ hasn’t really rolled in (despite me sending out quite a few copies). However, yet another one has surfaced. This one also in Swedish. I give you: The muzic.se review of ‘The Anger’!

Always nice with a review even though my name is, as you know, Halberstad and not Hilberstad.

Birthday road trip.

Good morning! (If it’s not a good morning then so be it, the weather is a bit crap here in GBG but I won’t let that bother me today, not now any way, maybe in a while when I have to walk the Boo. For those of you reading this at some other time of day, other than morning; good day, good afternoon, good evening and good night. If the good doesn’t apply to your preferred greeting phrase then the same response given above does: so be it!)

Camilla and I are going on a bit of a road trip today. Were going to the town of Linköping, or actually a small place in the between Linköping and Norrköping. Camilla’s sister and here boyfriend live there and Camilla’s sister turned 30 two days ago so she is tonight having a little party. We have rented a car (a rolling advertising sign) gotten the Boo a dog-sitter (no he can’t come because of 1. he can’t ride in the rented car and 2. Camilla’s sister have two cats or as Bosse would say; food on legs) and soon were off.

Crumbs make a loaf of bread you know…

Today has been a slow one. Took a bit of a lay in and ran through a couple of lecture notes. Then Camilla and I went to the place where one gets ones packages delivered (if not delivered by a messenger firm, and no it’s not the post office it’s a grocery store but I’ve touched on this subject before so if you are intrigued please feel free to brows my older entries). Camilla received a package with shoes I a package containing two books. One of which I am going to start reading now. It’s Derek Parfit Reasons and Persons.

So now you know.

Not much going on music wise. Got a mail from Rob saying that some reporter guy wanted to do a bit on our next recording, a sort of “in the studio” interview. I don’t mind. We’ll see if it pans out.

I think Rob is waiting for word from the studio guy before it’s a go. So just waiting now. I could write lyrics but I think I do that best pressured. Or I just might be a tad lazy…

Inspec(tacles)tor Gadget.

So I was at the Opticians today.
I have had these bad head aches and I thought that there might be something wrong with my glasses.
It’s been a while since I had my eyes checked so I thought it might be time for a check up.
There wasn’t anything wrong with my sight.
There was however something wring with the muscles holding up my left eye.
There working overtime, hence the headaches.
I asked what I could do to make it better and I was given two suggestions.
1: An exercise involving focusing on something near, then focusing on something far and doing so for ten minutes in the morning and ten in the evening.
2: Get new glasses with a prism on the left eyes glass. This prism will help me keep my eye steady and the muscles surrounding it relaxed.
I opted for number two, dumb-ass as I am.
So the optician sent me home with a pair of test prisms. Which I am going to try out for two weeks.
So now I look like this:

inspec

New President.

Do you know the chief of staff over there at that White House actually gave me a call a couple of months back. I picked up the phone and I heard: “Halberstram!” (The chief of staff always confuses me with that guy with witch the lead character from, the movie and book, American Psycho gets confused with. But he knows who I am… Really…). So he said “Halberstram! The job’s yours if you want it. We need a sturdy one to get this country back on track!” I gently, calmly but securely told him no. I said that my music, my studies and you readers were far more important. “Far more important then the world?” The chief of staff asked and though I ‘ve never seen him in person I always imagine him with a fat cigar in his mouth. Maybe that is because he always seem to be screaming but its really heard to hear what he says. He did not wait for an answer (nor was I going to give him one, we both knew. It’s an old routine). “All right then.” He said. “We’ll go for second best… again. I’ll give you a call in four years time to see if you changed your mind”. I told him to do that.

Signed, attached, sent.

Now a’days one cant really write: signed, sealed, delivered because that’s not how most of us in the industrialized countries handle our day to day written correspondence. (It’s also of no use to write it as a reference to the song [Spotify link]; the people who remember the song remember the old ways of sending letters but since I haven’t sent anything in the old way but rather in the new way of signed, attached, sent, the referral is pointless… much like this whole lead-in.)

Ok. Enough of the mumbo-jumbo.
I’ve sent my exam in. I’m done examing (it’s a word). Examination complete.

Wednesday = New semester, new course!
Tonight = Third match in the Handball World Championships for Sweden. This time against Spain.

Read, read, read your books…

I did not finish reading all those things I listed, and said I would read, yesterday. Even though I read for the better part of the day. Oh well. I’ve all ready read a bit today and am now writing away on my exam which is due tonight at 2359h, at the latest (well… not now-now because now I’m writing this to you lot).

I got my hands on some lecturenotes from the lecture of which I threw away my own ones. Good!

More music stuff I hear you say? You and me both…

Lesson learnt…

Do you want to hear something hilarious? Do you? Are you sitting down? If not do so or you will fall over. Sit yourself down on a chair and hold on to something because here it comes:

The lecture note, my lecture note, from the lecture in which we discussed issues central to the questions I have to answer is gone! “Gone?” you say. Yes gone. Not only that. It’s not like I need to look for them. I know where they are. Well then Sir they are not gone, not even misplaced. You just go fetch them!” I can’t. “Why not?” you say…

Because I have thrown them away. Because they were written on the back of something else. Because I had forgott my pad that day. And that something else was a copy of something so I didn’t need it since I had the original.

I have throw the lecture notes away!

Man I suck… oh well, back to reading.

To do, Today:

Today I am going to read.
I will start with Hollis, Martin, The Philosophy of Social Science; an Introduction, Chapter 5: Systems and Functions and chapter 6: Games With Rational Agents. This will lead me to an answer to the question: What is it that the Holist (from Holism) and Individualist really disagree about?
I will continue with Elster, JonVetenskapliga förklaringar [Scientific Explanations] (My Translation) chapters 6 and 7.
I will also have to read pages from:
Månson, Per, Moderna samhällsteorier [Modern Theories on Social Science] (My translation).
Fleck, Ludwik, Uppkomsten och Utvecklingen av ett vetenskapligt faktum [The Origin and Development of a Scientific Fact] (My Translation).
I will have to study two charts from Bourdieu, Pierre. The charts, or figures are called:
1. The Room of Social Positions
2. The Room of Styles of Life

What are you going to do today?

Yesterdays, todays and tomorrows news.

No post yesterday. Why? Well first there was study (and doing other things) madness then Camilla and I went to my nieces, and her boyfriends, house for dinner and socializing.

Two things of importance, really important, of highest global interest I would say, happened.

  1. I found the Prodigy song Everybody is in the place (Fairground Remix) [Spotify link] which is much better then the 155 and rising album version. Naturally on Spotify. I have been searching after this song since I left Göteborg, before I came back, in ’92.
  2. Rob bought a Sonor Glockenspiel (mayby something like this one… maybe not).

Today I’ve been doing everything to keep from studying, or to not have to study. But it’s all good. I finally have all the cables in order in my little home studio.

Tonight Arsenal play Hull… Come on Arsenal!

Oh. I almost forgot! When the next single off the album is released on 1/3-09 ther will be a B-side, a completely new song! I bet you can’t wait!

Thought loops and meeting with Rob.

I had a really hard time falling to sleep last night. As have I the passed few nights. I really don’t know what that is about. Maybe late coffee drinking or maybe I’m not just that tired.

Last night I fell into a thought loop. I do that sometimes when I can’t sleep, or more; when I’m right in the middle of being awake and sleeping. A stage where I can’t really control my train of thought but I know I’m not sleeping since I have some sense of aware perception left, or ongoing.

These thought loops are no fun. I always try to get out of them but never succeed (until I truly fall asleep).

Last nights thought loop was the Vampire Weekend song A-Punk. More specifically the chorus/bridge part of the song, both vocals and images. (You can find the whole thing here.) I had watched a re-run of MTV2UKs year end review show where that song, that group or that video picked up some kind of award.
Thoroughly disturbing! Not that it’s a bad song or video or anything, just hate those thought loops.

So Rob was here last night and we talked about a lot of things after I had demoed some cool sounds and Spotify (which if you haven’t got yet, get it, it’s the future).
Here’s some of the stuff we talked about (and some conclusions we came to):

  1.  Next single will be picked by you. So vote on the voting thing above!
  2. It will be released on march 1:st and we hope that we also can release the album ‘The Anger’ worldwide on that date as well.
  3. A, as of now, secret agreement. (Not meaning to keep anything from you but this one involves third party and I really don’t think that the third party is up to speed… nor are we fully. It’s a fun one I think so hang on for that.)

After that I played Rob the songs for the new record and we both said that it is an ok-go! We can start recording now and so we will. I’ll keep you posted on that.

Rob also brought me some really cool stuff. Stuff which completes my little home recording set up.
First of all I got The Arturia V Collection (a collection of sofware synths) and I got two mics, two GA R1 MK2 (go: products, ribbon mic, R1 MK II). So now I’m all set. I have no excuses as to not record at home.

I think that’s about it for now.
Ok?
Ok!
